Emerson’s math program is based on best practices for math instruction. We understand that, whenever possible, math needs to be hands-on, real-world, relevant, integrated (subject interconnection), conceptually and process focused, and taught to mastery. It needs to incorporate multiple perspectives and provide students with a myriad of opportunities in which they share their thinking and have time to hone their skills and understanding. The overall goal being that we foster lifelong math learners.
To accomplish this weighty goal, a team of Emerson teachers worked together to combine a variety of the best materials for mathematics education. These include the Mindset Mathematics curriculum designed by Jo Boaler, the San Francisco Unified School District’s current math curriculum, and other resources and materials that are specific to the concepts being covered in the classroom. This combination ensures a cohesive K-5 program that addresses the priority standards, as defined by the Oregon Department of Education, while ensuring that teachers are able to engage, challenge, and support their students at a variety of levels. Along with the materials provided by Emerson, teachers are given the autonomy to choose other materials to support their work, as long as they directly address the standards and meet the criteria for best practices.
