Educational Assistant

Job Purpose

The Educational Assistant (EA) is a full-time, salaried position. The main purposes of this role are to ensure students are supported and supervised throughout the day, and to provide teachers with direct support of students and/or activities.

Responsible To

The EA is under the direct supervision of the Supervising Educational Assistant (SEA) or their designee.

Essential Functions

  1. Participates as an effective team member in a manner that promotes collaboration for student success.

  2. Assists teachers in implementing/directing lessons or portions of lessons to a student or a group of students, and presents additional assignments as directed by a teacher.

  3. Assists teachers in working with students who may be demonstrating challenging behaviors; works as a member of a team to implement Positive Discipline strategies, as well as any behavior support plan and/or safety plan.

  4. Under a teacher's direction, participates in data collection for academic, social-emotional, and/or behavioral needs.

  5. Assists teachers in maintaining an environment conducive for learning and encouraging appropriate behavior by the students using Positive Discipline strategies and a consistent team approach.

  6. Assists teachers in carrying out designated strategies and procedures identified by the teacher, such as prompting student to switch to functionally equivalent replacement behavior and debriefing during the school day.

  7. As needed, assists teachers on field studies by using Positive Discipline strategies to reinforce appropriate behaviors.

  8. Supervises students during recesses for all grade levels (in collaboration with other EAs), implementing Positive Discipline strategies to support student behaviors and interactions

  9. Completes and submits incident reports (on the same day), as needed

Other Functions

Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The applicant should have coursework from a recognized college or university in child growth and development, sociology, psychology, health, education, or other courses directly related to the physical and/or psychology of children.

Two years successful related experience and/or training preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Must have experience working with children in educational setting

  2. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills

  3. Must be able to relate positively to young children

  4. Must be able to work as part of a team

  5. Must submit to a criminal background check prior to employment

  6. Must be familiar with, or willing to learn, Positive Discipline in the Classroom techniques

  7. Must be able to work independently with little supervision

Special Certification/Licensing

  1. A First-Aid Certificate issued by a recognized First Aid training program must be obtained upon appointment and must be kept valid during the term of employment.

  2. A CPR Certificate issued by a recognized CPR training program must be obtained upon appointment and kept valid during the term of employment.

Physical Requirements

Requires the ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50lbs. May also require the ability to restrain 50 to 100lbs. and requires continuous reaching, bending, crouching, twisting, kneeling and the repetitive use of arms, hands, wrists and legs.

SALARY: $40,000/year
SCHEDULE: Mon-Thurs 8:00-4:00; Fri 8:00-2:00
